Why are dominance hierarchies essential to our social and mental well being?
When people hear the term “dominance hierarchy” it makes sense that there would be a negative connotation administered immediately. This term does not mean something like an oppressive or tyrannical rule. Instead, it is a structure that, when we dominate as individuals, we can rise within. If we are competent and empathetic, then we have traits that will allow us to move up. These structures produce predictable order within which our society can form around, and we know people will behave predictably. Having foreseeable circumstances and behaviors allows our emotions to down-regulate, reducing our anxiety and distress. This approach is right for the group at large, as well as the individual.
