Shameful Statements
A wise mentor once told me that “should” and “what” statements are shameful. It took me a while to understand what he meant here. I can now see that these statements produce judgments imposed by us to other people. Saying someone “should” do something says that you are not doing something that I think that you “should” do. As far as “what” that seems more like calling someone out. Saying “what” are you doing that is something I would not do. Again, these both seem like very judgemental statements. I think the thing to keep in mind here is that this rhetoric can be internal as well. I see myself all the time saying, “I should do this” or “what are you doing, you idiot.” I often think times we are our own worst enemies.
