Change
Perhaps we can agree that the only constant in life is change. The sage honors this by realizing that if we hold onto the present, it will bring us suffering due to its constant passing. We are standing in a river of time that, for no two seconds, will ever be the same. If we recognize this, then we will not be caught off guard when misfortune strikes. When such times change for the worst, if we do not cling to the past thoughts of times better off, then perhaps our suffering will not be so intense.
