How are you doing?

We can never know the mental state of another. This idea is part of the human condition that requires us to be genuinely alone until we are dead. This point allows us to invite ourselves to the place of not knowing and doing everything that we can to support the other. Perhaps an outlash or criminal act is simply an outcry for help. While our friends are showing on Facebook that they have cleaned their entire home while on lockdown, maybe that’s a cover-up for how they are doing. Maybe cleaning is a way of mentally distracting themselves from the situation at hand. Maybe posting on Facebook is an attempt at getting the social connection and validation they so badly need. I welcome you to consider that they might be crumbling on the inside. Take a step and reach out to them. Ask them, “How are you doing?”
