Are our needs being met?

According to Abraham Maslow, we have five categories of needs consisting of physiological, safety, love, esteem, and finally, self-actualization. It’s interesting to contemplate how many of these needs are being appropriately met, or not, by the system that we have created (political/economic). It seems as though these systems intended to provide a society where these needs could be met. To some degree, this seems to have occurred. However, something like love appears to be severely lacking in especially the overdeveloped western world. How can we get back to a reality that might be more balanced?
