Surrogate Family

When I speak with most people and I tell them that I’m from New Hampshire and that I’ve lived in California for five years, they think that it’s pretty cool. For a long time, I tended to agree with that assertion. It’s only after learning about emotional distancing that I think it’s not all that it’s cracked up to be. It seems to me that I have physically distanced myself from my family because the unresolved conflict was too much for me to handle. This concept especially makes sense when I realized that my father’s Bi-polar disease was unpredictable and incurable. It seems like this pattern is right of many people who leave their homes in search of other geographical locations. I do not think it’s a bad thing, just a coping mechanism of which to be aware.
