Dependency vs Independence
Hopefully, at this point, we have realized that we are not entirely individuals, but we also cannot become wholly identified with the group. If we become dependent on others, then we perhaps cannot make decisions on our own. This notion is often referred to as fusion. On the other end of the spectrum, if we carry independence to its bitter end, we become a loaner. This extreme provides nearly no human connection. So we must walk a tightrope between losing ourselves to “other,” and suffering “other” to be entirely with ourselves.
