De-fen-sive-ness

/dəˈfensivnəs/ the quality of being anxious to challenge or avoid criticism. Behavior intended to defend or protect. This notion seems to me to be the opposite of openness and honesty. Two crucial factors in an interaction where communication flourishes. This topic appears to be a response to deep-seated insecurity. If we cannot take criticism, it makes sense that we believe in the accusation of being right. If we did not think lowly of ourselves, then challenges would be welcome, or even an opportunity to grow. There is little room for open communication when we are feeling defensive or in a mode of protection.
